The peninsula of Chalkidiki, which resembles the trident of Poseidon, is located south of Thessaloniki, between two bays, Thermaikos and Stryonikos. It consists of three smaller peninsulas, Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos, and its coastline is approximately 550 klm. long. It is mainly a hilly area, with lowlands mainly in the west. The highest mountain of the area is Holomontas with its highest peak reaching 1165meters. The local economy is based both on agricultural production, with olive oil being the most important export product, and tourism. The beautiful coastline with the countless coves, clear blue waters and lush vegetation have made this place one of the most popular holiday destinations both for Greeks and foreigners. Nowadays Chalkidiki has a highly developed tourist infrastructure with numerous hotels, rooms to let, organized camping, and intense nightlife. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Polygyros while several major centers are located along the coast. Chalkidiki is easily accessible by car or plane.
