The church of St. John “en Krimno" or "at the precipice" is located on a rock and inside a cave at an altitude of about 100 meters above Kapsali. To get there you need to climb 130 stone steps, but the view from the top will reward you. The present church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was renovated in 1725 by monk Ioannikios, as evidenced by the entrance sign. According to tradition however, several centuries ago it was dedicated to St. John the Theologian, who had sought refuge here while he was persecuted by the Romans. The chapel celebrates twice a year: the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24th) and his beheading (August 29th).
