The Holy Commune Monastery of the Most Holy Virgin Mary of Platytera in Corfu was founded in 1743 by the Hieromonk Chrysanthos Syropoulos from Lefkada.

This male monastery was soon staffed by twenty monks and developed a significant worship, pastoral and charitable action and contribution to the society of Corfu.

The auspicious evolution of the Holy Monastery of Platytera, interrupted the fire that the monastery suffered by the French in 1798. A few years later the miraculous finding of the Holy Icon of the Virgin gave to the monks the power to fight for its renovation. The cover and the integument of the icon, which is located on the right pilgrim-place, are donated by Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias from Russia.

In 1801 the temple was inaugurated by the first Metropolitan of Corfu, after the re-establishment of the episcopal throne, Ierotheos (1800-1813). The castellated belfry stands out at the entrance to the monastery.

The Kapodistria’s family and Ioannis himself (the first Governor of the Neohellenic State) developed special relations with the monastery, which he benefited in various ways. In the monastery, many donations are saved. There, are the tombs of Antonios-Maria Kapodistrias (father of the governor), Augustinos Kapodistrias (brother of Ioannis) and Ioannis Kapodistrias himself.

Also in the monastery are the tombs of the hero of the Greek Revolution Fotis Tzavellas, the tomb of Andreas Moustoksidis, other famous persons of the 19th century, most of the Metropolitans of Corfu after the re-establishment of the episcopal throne, and most of the monastery's brothers.

The monastery's holy monument is a piece of holy relics, with the major of them a large part of Saint Charalampos scapula. In the monastery are still saved remarkable icons and creations of ecclesiastical art of great artistic value.

The monastery of Panagia Evangelistria of Evropouloi belongs to the monastery as metochi (glebe land). The Holy Monastery of Platytera celebrates on 15th of August, the Feast of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos.

This important pilgrimage is located in the homonymous Platytera suburb, at the end of today's Ioulia Andreadis Street, about one kilometer from the historic center of the old town of Corfu.
