The Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Giromeri, is located in the border area of the Prefecture of Thesprotia, eight kilometers northeast of the city of Filiates, near the Greek-Albanian borders, built at an altitude of about 300 meters, on the western slopes of the mountain of  Farmakovouni.

One of the most important, older and unfortunately few active monasteries today in Epirus is the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Giromeri. The founder of the monastery is the Saint Nilos the Erichiotis, the sacred.

The Monastery of Giromeri was founded in the beginning of the 14th century (between 1310 and 1320), at the time of the prosperity of the Despotate of Epirus. It formed an important monastic center and reached its greatest peak in the middle of the 16th century, a time when, according to Theodosius Zygomalas, it numbered about 300 monks.

The monastery is approximately built at an altitude of 300 meters on the western slope of Mount Farmakovouni. It is located on a steep rock and is surrounded by a landscape of stunning natural beauty with lush vegetation and spring water.

The monastery's offering to the area of Thesprotia was great throughout its long history, contributing to the preservation of the national and religious conscience of the inhabitants. Typical was the operation of the Hidden School and the Hieratic School within the monastery. Also, at the expense of the monastery, schools operated in some of the villages in the area.

The Catholic of the monastery is the result of at least two building phases. As a building material, the stone of the area is distinguished in red and white tones, while the roof was always a tiled roof.

Today's brotherhood consists of three monks and settled in the monastery in 1989.

The monastery celebrates on the 15th of August and on the celebration of its founder Saint Nilos, on January 2. It also celebrates festively on Tuesday Easter, the memory of the Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene in whose name, recently constructed, a Chapel inside the monastery.

Saint Nilos, the Holy One, deceased in 1334. His relic was buried a short distance from the Monastery of Giromeri, and remains there until today, because when they attempted, a few years after his death, the exhumation and transfer of his relics, by divine concession, a huge rock was thrown and covered the tomb. Today, there is a small chapel above the tomb of Saint Nilos. At a short distance from the monastery, one can also visit the traditional villages of Giromeri, Finiki, Faneromeni, Sideris and Plaisio.
