The unique natural lake of Crete is between Chania and Rethymnon, only 2.5 kilometers South of Georgioupolis. The lake is also referred to as Korisia but nowadays most people know it by the name of Kourna, meaning lake or bath in Arabic. The lake has a depth of 22.5 meters and is home to many species of birds, cormorants, moorhens and turtles, water snakes and eels. The lake and its surroundings are a wonderful ecosystem with rich flora and fauna and are included in the network Natura 2000. In summer the receding waters show the path that surrounds the lake (about 3.5 km.). You can enjoy a relaxing day at the beautiful surroundings of the lake or swim at the small beaches that are formed in the area. Also, you can rent water bikes and explore the lake. On the banks of the lake you can find various cafeterias and restaurants.
