Both mountains belong in the NATURA network. They are also part of Rhodope Mountains and they cover an area of 32,090 hectares while their average altitude is 1,400 meters.
The area is covered by forests with deciduous oak, beech, black pine, forest pine and birch. There is also a large number of rare plants such as the beautiful snowbell Soldanella rhodopaea.
Haidou Mountain is one of the most important habitats in Greece and home to woodland mammals such as bears, wolves and jackals. The forest also shelters 102 species of birds such as the capercaillie, the black stork, the Egyptian vulture and others.
