Abdera was founded in the 7th century B.C from Ionian residents. In 545 BC their population was strengthened by a stronger wave of settlers who came from Teos. The town became economically independent quickly because of trade and farming. However, in Roman times it declined and lost some of its glory. It was now limited to the fortified hill of the ancient acropolis and was renamed to Polystylon until the Ottoman era.
The construction of the Museum was completed in 1993 and the exhibition occupies the ground floor and the first floor. Here you can learn about the history of the city through texts about mythology, history and archaeological research, biographies of prominent residents of Abdera, ancient texts and maps.
The presentation of the exhibits is divided into three thematic categories: public life, private life and burial customs. The exhibition covers the period from the 7th century B.C. until the 13th century A.D.
